Big Military Children Mosaic on Display

Military Children Mosaic on Display

A large, impactful, and symbolic mosaic created by Military Children is on display in our Brompton-on-Swale Gallery throughout August. The story behind it is outlined below.

In honour of the Month of the Military Child, a unique and inspiring art workshop was held across North Yorkshire. Led by Angela Campbell and the Service Children\’s Champion\’s team, the event aimed to highlight the remarkable strength and resilience of military children, while showcasing the work of award-winning local artist, Lucy Pittaway.

The workshop saw the participation of 100 service children from 10 schools across North Yorkshire. Each child was given an individual canvas and a small section of Lucy Pittaway\’s artwork, \’Starting Again\’, to recreate using acrylic paint. The chosen artwork was thoughtfully modified to include dandelions, symbolising the emblem of military children.

Throughout the workshop, children aged 6 to 16, from military-connected families, shared their unique and diverse experiences as they worked on their canvases. The final result was a stunning patchwork of vibrant colours and abstract elements that reflected the individuality and collective strength of the county’s service children.

The assembled piece was first displayed at the Service Children\’s Awards at Tennants in Leyburn. It then moved to The Station in Richmond before finding a temporary home at the Lucy Pittaway Gallery in Brompton-on-Swale during August. Next, it will visit their York Gallery in September before being showcased at the Service of Remembrance at Ripon Cathedral in November.

A special thank you goes out to all the children, young people, and school staff who contributed to this meaningful project. More information about Service Children and their work can be found on the dedicated page of Risedale School’s website.

Visitors can view the mosaic at the Lucy Pittaway Brompton Gallery throughout August, Station Road, DL10 7SN. Telephone 01748 810 965 for more details.
