What an incredible day it was! Sitting on that famous red sofa felt like a real pinch-me moment. Being invited onto #BBCBreakfast News to speak about our journey and our vision for the future was such a privilege.
It all began with the fall of the majestic Sycamore Gap tree, a moment that sparked something truly special. Inspired by this event, we embarked on a creative journey that led us to a woodland trail near Masham, North Yorkshire, where we breathed new life into the landscape.
When I decided to immortalise the fallen tree in my artwork, little did I know it would blossom into something even greater. With a pledge to plant a tree for every print sold, we set out to create a legacy woodland. And now, with over 2,800 prints sold, we\’re turning that vision into reality!
Last week, I had the privilege of planting the first whips at the Swinton Estate, alongside Felicity Cunliffe-Lister, the estate’s owner. Our mission? To create a legacy that would leave a positive and lasting impact.
More than 600 whips—sycamore, oak, rowan, and hazel trees—have already taken root, with plans for even more later this year. This woodland, nestled around the 200-year-old Druid’s Temple, will be a sanctuary for generations to come.
Imagine strolling along a pathway, lined with chippings from fallen larch trees, through a woodland adorned with artistic installations, cosy relaxation spots, and educational boards. I hope that this space will not only provide relaxation but also inspire a newfound appreciation for art and nature.
As I put it, “If it can inspire people’s interest in art and the countryside, then the legacy of the Sycamore Gap tree will be a positive one.”
