Lucy Commemorative Artwork
To mark the occasion, artist Lucy Pittaway has created a new piece inspired by John Dobbin’s 1875 painting of the scene. Her interpretation captures the essence of that day while reflecting her own style. “The Skerne Bridge had to be part of it,” says Lucy. “I wanted to show the excitement of the journey and include details that people will recognise.”

This project is personal for Lucy, who grew up near the railway line and even designed a Locomotion No.1 tea towel as a student at Darlington College of Technology. Two centuries later, she revisits the subject in a way that connects past and present.
