I was born in a town close to the ICI works on Teesside. Although I later moved away from this area my family lived in houses on streets like this, dwarfed by the huge chimneys rising from the ground behind them. They became part of the scenery to us, barely noticed and life existed in the community beneath the smoke, where dogs and kids ran around in the streets chasing the window cleaners and men on bikes. I remember the call of the rag and bone man and the milk float delivering his bottles in the early hours of the morning.
