Stockton & Darlington Railway 200 - Original Artwork
DESCRIPTION
Created to celebrate 200 years since the birth of the passenger railway, this artwork captures the moment the world changed forever with the first passenger journey on the Stockton & Darlington Railway in 1825.
Commissioned as part of the anniversary celebrations, Lucy Pittaway brings the story to life in her signature style. The historic Skerne Bridge, crowds gathering to witness history being made, and the famous steam engine, Locomotion No.1, all take centre stage, surrounded by rolling countryside and splashes of colour.
Inspired by the original 1825 scene painted by John Dobbin, Lucy adds her own twist, with playful touches – including a few familiar sheep – and a vibrant palette that reflects the sense of excitement and pride felt on that day.
